I don&#8217;t think there were any other complications but our friends were very annoyed and at first wanted to sue the vendors or real estate agents for misleading advertising.</p>

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thanks for your responses.  We worked out the difference between the interest saved (between 6.95% fixed and current variable 7.07%) over two years and compared to the $300 fee to make the change, it&#8217;s not worth it.</p>
<p>The loan will be kept on variable interest with the hope that interest rates don&#8217;t rise too much in the near future!</p>

If you&#8217;re paying 7.5% (including GST), that&#8217;s better than ours!  We now have 6 properties with them and I&#8217;ve thought about trying to get a further reduction.<br />

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s a Keswick Island off Mackay &#8211; is that the one you mean?  There are two islands close together &#8211; St Bees and Keswick.  As far as I know, there is nothing on the island but goats!  I do seem to recall that someone had bought Keswick and was planning some sort of development.  Perhaps contact the Mackay City Council for some info.<br />

It was more a 1:1 and we look for a 2:1 return i.e. purchase price was, say $250K, and rent was only $250 per week. Rent is guaranteed but the management fees are far higher than normal. I guess if you want an investment that is free of worry, they&#8217;re a good buy.</p>

Re your post on Townsville &#8211; yes we do have a big army base but also airforce, about 12,000 uni students and staff and also industry (Qld Nickel, Korea Zinc etc).  Population is about 150,000 &#8211; it&#8217;s the 2nd biggest city in Qld.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s as dry as a bone at present but not a bad place to work, live&#8230;and invest!</p>

<p>Any comments on the list from Cairns forumites?  There&#8217;s a fair bit of rivalry between the two towns in lots of ways and Townsville usually comes off second best.</p>
