I'm in the process of subdividing a block of land and building a dwelling at the back of the property. My aim is to do this as an owner builder. I called the Victorian building commission yesterday and was told if you build as an owner builder you cannot build to profit or rent. When i asked how long i had to live in the property before i could sell or rent she couldn't give me an answer and seemed like she had no clue. What if i have financial hardship 6 months from moving in and have no choice but to sell or move out?
I know a dozen people who have built as owner builder and rented out the property as soon as it has been completed. Have they broken the law or have they found a loop hole?
