It seems to me now is a great time to invest in New Zealand. Our dollar is very strong, we have a tax treaty with NZ (so can negatively gear etc), they have high rental returns, and seem to be poised for stronger growth over the next five years. Has anyone looked at it as an investment idea? Do you know any agents that specialise in overseas property investing?

    Hey Tony,

I agree mate, I have seen some decent yeilding properties. Would love to get an opinion from other investors as I am not informed much about the New Zealand market. Definetly will be doing more research in weeks to come. Have seen a block of 3 units selling separetley or together listed at 40k 50k and 50k renting at 120 per week. Looks very interesting.

Tend to generally agree. But need to check,
    1) Can you sell it when the time comes ok
    2) Can you rent it in the meantime.

Both of which come back to jobs. Check area you are considering for job prospects (future growth and now)

Actually on reflection my comment may over simplify. For the sort of rents you are talking about Granny may be able to afford it. So perhaps another question may be – OR is it a retirement destination

Where in NZ were you looking to buy.

    1) Auckland
    2) Wellington
    3) Hamilton

In that order. If investing in regions then need to know new jobs are about to be created there.

    For retirement havens,
    1) Nelson
    2) Tauranga
    3) Bay of Islands

Also, what do you think would be better. Getting loan in Australia or New Zealand for purchasing in NZ?

I dont think you will find an Aust company willing to lend on a security held in NZ. You will need to get an NZ bank to fund.
    – NZ interest rates are better anyway. This is half of the attraction.
Bit mixed on Whanganui. I would try and find out census figures – to try and figure out if it is growing or shrinking. and if it is growing is it growing at a rate above or below the national average. Also try and find a website giving job prospects for the region. Is the town growing/shrinking or stagnant?

If you are genuinely going to buy, and never ever sell then it may be ok….what are rental vacancy rates like in the area? Wont be a good investment if you cant get a tenant!

    Thanks for your reply,

I am still at the researching bit hehe. If I get more serious I would consider goin to NZ and see what can be done from there as I am not a fan of buying without seeing the property 1st hand.
