    Hey all,

Im looking into starting a new business next yr importing Mens Ties (both silk and Poly) as well as Bow ties. (and selling online on a stand alone web site)

As well as having “straight” ties ill also have pre-tied ones as well as Bow Ties.

So my question is what sort of ties have people been looking for and have been hard to find? perhaps a certain colour or pattern?? or perhaps a printed tie with a specific picture??

Ill be seeing my supplier soon and a more informed idea of what people want would be greatly appreciated

Must admit I’ve really liked the new lighter summer colours that have come out so I’ve bought a few of those for the boys in my life. I try not to pay more than $49, but I’d like to be able to get great ties (must be quality fabric, silk or silk mix) around thirty dollars.

    Sorry mate,

But I have recently suggested and implemented a “no tie” policy in our office, and has been very successful, so I can’t offer any suggestions. I think ties are ridiculous.

But good luck, as there are many out there who will disagree with me.

I know there have been studies linking Doctor’s Ties with bacterial infection vectors etc. Hence the rising popularity in Bow Ties for Medical Specialists.

Maybe you can target some advertising to these busy professionals who might love to shop online.

I heard they were first worn by the Roman foot soldiers, slogging it out over long marches. Sounds realistic for me to be founded in some form of truth.

It was literally a rag around their necks to wipe both the sweat and dust from their faces and brows as they marched through the parched battlefields.

How it went from there to be worn by posh swanning around business suit types is unknown, but I think it’s original useful purpose has long disappeared. [eh]

Most of my ties consist of that down-ward angle line style [blink]

i think peoples tastes are going to vary HUGELY.. so the more designs the better.

Goodluck… be sure to post the link up when things are up and running [specool]

    Mate,

A very broad question, different strokes for different folks.

All my ties are silk, patterns vary including plain colors, stripes, dots, zig zags, pinks, blues, whites, etc. I’ve got a heap of them.

I think that your type of business is going to be at the mercy of the ever changing fashion industry, the ties that I bought last year aren’t in fashion this year, and I’m sure the ones that I bought this year won’t be in fashion next year. Best get a subscription to GQ and keep up with the trends.

There are quite a few tie distributors around, the Tie Rack is one that springs to mind, seem to sell a pretty good quality tie at a reasonable price, and of couse you can always go and buy yourself a gucci or versace etc from one of the boutiques or larger department store.

Then you’ve got the ebay avenue where you can get almost any design at a pretty cheap price.

Wondering what your angle is to differentiate yourself from these players?

    Thank you for your replies,

In regards to my “angle”, simple, offer great personal customer service, as well as the lowest price and delivery prices.

My quality will be the same as any department store and for a fraction of the price.

Im in korea now buying my first order, and im pleased with what i have seen thus far.

I have researched the Aussie competition, and not only are the prices they offer for ties high in my opinion (for an online shop with minimal overheads) the range online is very limited and the postal costs are also inflated to increase the already very large profit margin.

So a fair price, good quality, good range and no BS customer service. thats my angle.

Also i may add that this is something im doing on the side, im not borrowing any money or quitting my day job. And starting small scale to begin with. if it goes well than good luck for me, if not than oh well i gave it a shot.

Again thank you for the advice, and i will put an update on how things are progressing.

    Sounds good Jason.

Let me know when you’ve got some for sale and I’ll have a look, always need new ties ;).

    Cheers

    Dave.
