I’ve organised a few companies to give me quotes on decks for two houses. I tried to get them to give me an idea of costs over the phone but no one would volunteer. Instead they asked me how much I had to spend which i thought was a damn cheek.

Is it cheaper to go for one of those steel pre-fab jobs instead of the traditional timber?

Can anyone tell me how much their deck cost?
    thanks

    Milly,

my step dad put in a timber deck, more a floating floor over a concrete area next to his spa, the area is probably 5m by 5m, from memory it cost him more than $5k and we did all the labour.

It will vary depending on the decking area, the height of the deck, the type of timber you use, roof/covering, hand rails, etc.

If you’re in Vic, my brother may be able to help you out to construct the deck for a reasonable rate.

thanks D, Unfortunetly I live in brisbane so cannot take you up on the offer. I’d offer free lodging for the duration but I’ m not sure that I can afford to pay anyone enough to want to stay at my house with four noisy boys.

    Milly,

We have just finished our deck which was 5 x 7m & 1.5m off the ground. We did everything ourselves except the footing holes which we got an excavator to do. We used hardwood which is a little bit more expensive than pine and all up it cost us about $6500. I had a good mate of mine who works for a building firm specialising in outdoor decking and he quoted us about $11000 and that was with a discount on the labour. We only worked on weekends and I had a lot of help from friends, I just needed to put on a BBQ and a few beers for them which was all well and truly worth it!!

    Good Luck

Wow, this is all a bit surreal as we have the carpenter and his 3 assistants around our place this morning slapping it up as I write.

Quote was to supply all labour and everything except the top decking timber.

    Deck is 9m x 4m.

    The quote was for 5K.

The jarrah decking boards were 1.3K.

They started this morning and should be finished this evening after I get home from work.

I figure I’ll get paid buku to do what I do best and let the pro’s earn a bit whilst they do what they do best.

That way I end up with a decent deck for the next 50 or 60 years, and the cost will long be forgotten.
