COAL PRODUCER BUYS UP $20 MILLION OF LOCAL LAND

Solid energy has spent more than $20 million buying up land in Southland in the last eight months, according to local newspaper The Southland Times.

But the organisation is remaining mum about intentions – and those who have been approached to sell have signed confidentiality agreements.
Solid energy boss Dr Don Elder recently said Southlands lignite resources could produce enough petrol for the whole country.

The state owned coal mining compay is looking at feasibility of building a multi – billion dollar plant in southland to turn lignite into petrol.

Venture southland predicts the plant would generate more than 500 full time jobs, with benefits for the local port and suppliers.

NB: These projects have been touted for years but the clear signs are that now they are actually happening – they have just spent 20 mill on the land!
