Sorry for the off-track thread, but to those of you who visit New Zealand… Could I ask you a couple of questions?
1. What’s the cheapest method of getting there and back? (Apart from swim.) [tongue]
2. I’m thinking of buying a car while there, and shipping it back (to NSW). Has anyone done this or know what it costs, how to go about it, or perhaps where I could find out?
The reason for Q2 is, I’m considering purchasing a used Toyota Prius – they seem to be cheaper over there. I’m not even sure at this point, if I can register it here. I vaguely remember something about only cars of a certain age can be imported – but I’m just not sure.
Anyway, any help appreciated – thanks for reading…

when importing from japan to oz there are some serious duties to pay – but not sure about nz to oz.

If you buy a car in New Zealand, you have to keep it there for 12 months before you can bring it back to Australia. But if you bring it back within 12 months you will pay duty.

Cars are cheap in NZ because they have less strict safety standards. Second hand Japanese vehicles have flooded the market. These vehicles are not manufactured to Australian standards and wil lrequire some modification to comply as well as duty to be paid.

For cheap flights check http://www.freedomair.com.au if you buy online early enough they are quite cheap – plus they fly into some regional areas not covered by the majors.

Thanks. I did an expired auction search on ebay and found some other info. It made me suspect the cars were jap imports. Not sure if it was from that auction or elsewhere, I also found that if they are jap imports, that the Toyota Australia service computers don’t read Japanese. Although there’s probably a way around that. There’s also about $3,000 to pay GST and import duty. Then I assume about $300 more to fit a mains charger (instead of relying on the petrol engine to recharge the batteries).
So as you said, it doesn’t sound like it’s worth the hassle.

Most of the cars in NZ are jap imports! I think what Simon has stated about the less strict safety regulations is valid.
Freedom Air is definitely the cheapest for flights, but it depends where you are flying from/to.

I believe the biggest safety that does nt comply with AUST standards is the lack of side intrusion bars (steel reinforcing channel that is welded intothe door to prevent crushing from side impact)…
And we all know how crazy the Sydney sity clickers are [blink]
And if you all have a visual of that…. then you should see the insurance companies over here cry when the weather man announces it is raining outside (more reliable than predicting rain [confused2])
Lets just say …. if you have ever been to a carnival and hopped on the dodgems…. well you can fill in the gaps!!!! The bill at the end of the day is usually over $100,000 per day of rain put it that way.

when i moved to NZ in late 2003 i took my 2001 falcon there as Australian imported cars are a lot more expensive in NZ than here in Oz. At that time my car was worth about $16000 in Oz yet worth $26,000 in NZ. You might be better taking your car there and selling it !

Have been to NZ four times in the last 6 months and although Freedom Air appears cheaper, it’s mucg better travelling with either Emirates or Aerolineas Argentinas.Emirates were doing round trips including taxes SYD-AKL for low $400’s and the service and amenities on board are second to none. Aerolineas Argentinas a re even a little cheaper but you get a 20yo plane and 50yo flight attendants.
Hope this helpsIf you’re flying directly to Hamilton or buying property around there, it may be cheaper flying Freedom, but I always just rent a car at the AKL airport for about $40 a day. Ace Rentals is the cheapest.
