    Hey all,

I had a thought about eliminating sound entering my bedrooms in my upcoming development. Does anyone know of any materials i can use, or what they might cost?

I think that there is a building material called hebel which has good sound proofing properties. It’s aerated concreat sheets about an inch or so thick. you might want to look into that.

    Xenia,

You would make a fortune if you can find something to dull the noise from the kids in a car [headphone]

I always thought the car manufacturer that comes up with a perspex divider would be on the money too! [biggrin]

    Cheers

    Hi Property Passion
    For sound reduction:
Windows need to be double glazed – expensive but also great for insulation.
You could build solid brick walls ie. not brick veneer. – also expensive.
If you are planning a rendered look, then there is a system of putting sheets of polystyrene 70-100mm thick onto the timber frame and then rendering over top. If done properly this system works well, great insulation, and also sound too I guess.
But all these are for outside walls.
For inside you can get insulation batts that are also designed for sound reduction. Put them in ceiling and walls. Again, more expensive than normal batts.
Also would need a solid core door, not hollow – yes you guessed it -quite expensive.
My only idea for cheap stuff is line all the walls with egg cartons and call it art?[specool]
Or maybe line the insides of the walls with egg cartons. That should get a great expression from the builder when you ask him to do it.[confused2]
    Cheers

dougiejg’s first few ideas make sense
but the egg carton idea is a myth for soundproofing
    accoustic s yes…..soundproofing no
just a small note…..once you soundproof it, you’ll need to provide external air into the room, eg air con…..

Dr.Y (my other half, Angelo), recently looked into buying a development property in a flight path next to the airport. He did some research into building material and found a material called hebel (to be used INTEAD of bricks), it is much cheaper and the buiding can be up sooner reducing holding costs also.

It was acceptable to council regulations as a suitable sound proofing material. As Ange suggested, you may want to look into this further!

Jen, maybe you could use it to sound proof cars too! [biggrin]
I find turning up the stero works well and
recently I discovered Jatz buiscuits, they dont melt in the car and they provide a few minutes of SILENCE!!!!
