We’ve had a few accountants today mention an ATO seminar they went to south of Sydney yesterday. I gather the ATO do something every year prior to tax season to bring accountants up to speed on ATO expectations.
It’s called a Satellite Seminar, so in many places it would be broadcast on Sky i.e. accountants would assemble in a pub or a club and the seminar would play at a designated time. (At least without the ATO there in person they could heckle.)
The entire seminar presentation – over 100 pages – is available on the ATO site. It has some good, concise explanations about lots of things. It would be the best guide to what the ATO is particularly looking at this season. If you do your own tax, I reckon it’s worth downloading this document and pulling out the relevant bits.
    The link is:

But if I’ve stuffed that up, just go to http://www.ato.gov.au That’s the ATO home page. Then on the left hand side, click on For Tax Professionals. And then the Satellite Seminar handout.

Thanks Scott! It’s interesting to see communication between the Tax Office and accountants. I haven’t even heard of a ‘Sun Screen’ allowance, for example. :)
