    Hi
I am going to NZ Invercargill, Queenstown and Dunedin over Christmas to maintain properties and sort out issues. Does anyone know the best place to:
    1) Hire a cheap car in Dunedin/Invercargill
    2) Get cheap accomodation in Invercargill/Queenstown
    3) Buy cheap meals in Dunedin, Invercargill
    3) Buy paint and vacuum cleaner (is there a Kmart?)

    Thanks!

    Hi twimpeaks.

I am also going to NZ, in January. I’m planning to stay in the South somewhere, not sure where though.

Have a read through the recent thread I posted… you may find some of your answers there. I think i’ll be staying at a backpackers hostel… cheapest option.

Let us know how you go.

    Regards,
    Ozi

    Hi Twinpeaks
Wouldn’t be surprised if Bob Carr doesn’t own a few motels over there to take advantage of the flood of property investors he has forced out of NSW.
    cheers [wink]

I have no sympathy for NSW investors who whinge about the tax system and still blindly vote for the moronic Labor Government. Do your whinging at the next election. I am sooooo sick of Labor and I live in Kingsford Smith. I am surrounded by the idiots. Now I have to deal with Mr Greenpeace himself. I should move to Wentworth!

I voted for bob car, only because he jogs and I like joggers, but with what he’s done to the sydney city structure/ infrastructure/ planning/ investment/ economy, I am voting for someone else. Greens maybe.

With the accom in NZ Sth island, I was in Dunedin this year and there are heaps and heaps of cheap and wonderfully comfy B&B’s. Don’t worry about accom, sort it out when you get there (ie on the fly). Also don’t worry about hiring a car, just sort it out when you get there (near the airport). If by chance you go in the middle of some mega tourist event (not aware of any in dunedin) then bring along a fisher and paykel colourful tent and camp next to the uni.

What you have to really worry about is the driving though those picturesque windy roads. I kept on thinking I was ayrton senna and had some very near death experiences on hairpin corners up windy hills.

If you go through one of the big hire-car companies, I have found that their cheapest rates are usually offered to RACV (or equivalent) members, or otherwise Frequent Flyers. All you have to do is give them your member number.

Shop around too. We hired a car for eight days in September and there was a substantial price difference between the different companies. We chose Hertz in the end and were very pleased.

As for accommodation, check out http://www.ratestogo.com.au and http://www.wotif.com.au You can book up to about three weeks in advance.
