    Hey Melbear, Howdy!,
I’m a bit of a film buff (it’s on my profile!). I was really disappointed that ‘The Movie Show’ was axed from SBS. It was probably the only true independent didactic film reviewing that gave reviews of a lot of Indy house/ independent film making. The people like Leigh Patch from the Sun Herald would give more of a review on how good a reviewer they are than the film they are reviewing! The Age is good. I mainly go to the Nova or The Lumiere in Melbourne. They’ve managed to survive the battle against the almighty Hollywood dollar formula trite with no budget constraints. More action and money = more bums on seats = return on profit = forget film art and just sell! The best films I’ve seen (and there’s a few in there) have been probably 90% at the Nova, etc. The Carlton movie house was closed down, the Trak in Toorak was shut down, the Valhalla in Richmond was shut down, etc as they couldn’t managed to make money out of it to make it viable. At least apart from Hollywood and Canne, there are still organisations like The Sundance Film Festival so there will always be a way for the expression of the human condition globably to raise it’s head and then go on (more less than often) and win a commercial award. Some of these films include first time directors, the use of no professional actors, filming reduced to only a hand held camera (Breaking the Waves for example) making the movie for free regardless?,,etc,.
What about some favorite actors/actresses as a theme to capture a character or film. How about who directed this film? Who got turned down for a part that made someone a star? What do you think about this producer? Anyone? Sorry to waffle (as usual) but I love film. What do you think?
Love, hugs and regards to you and your family.
    Gatsby!
What do others think of this or an opinion they may hold?

    Hey Gatsby

One, actually two of our ‘alternate’ movie theatres got closed down too – as they couldn’t compete with the Hoyts and Greater Unionses. Bit sad really…

I don’t get to see too many movies anymore – when at Uni I saw about 1 a week, but now I’m lucky if it’s 1 every 3 months, so I know nothing about anything![biggrin]

    Dear Mel and JetDollars,
Actually since I’ve been keeping my money diary religiously from ‘Tales from the Trenches’ (no, it’s not a movie!) I only manage to now see about 1 a fortnight. Before I attended Steve’s conference back in March I would see on average 2 indy movies a week.
A bit of film trivia! Which actor played the main role in Apocalypse Now by Coppolla for 2 weeks only to be sacked by Coppolla and replaced later with Martin Sheen?

    Here’s an easy one.
Which female actress has recently been nominated into the Hall of Fame in the US and she is known for a poor accent in an Australian film? Ironically, she has been always praised for her command of accents. Tonight’s clue is a line from one of her films.
(and if you can’t get this one then you’ll have to wait until the Movie Show returns in one month!) “I had a farm in Africa.”
The time it takes to reply with the correct answer will tell me if you know this off the top of your ‘Cinema Paradisio’ head (another good film, might I had?),……….GO!!
    Cheers,
    Gatsby!

“General to the North and army of the Felix legions. Loyal servant to the true Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife! And I will have my vengeance, in this life, or the next!”
    Myydral,
When Maximus was waiting before first fighting in the Colosseum, the child, Luiscius Farrass came up to him and asked, ‘Do they have good horses in Spain?.’ Maximus replied, ‘Yes, Some of the best’ and then pointed to his chest armour where 2 horses were pictured on it. Russell Crowe named them ‘Argento and Scarpia” and replied ‘They were my horses, they were taken from me.’ What 2 horses’ names from a long running Western series did Russell Crowe use and turn these two names into an acronym to give to the names he improvised for the names on the two horses on his chest armour?
    Cheers,
    Gatsby!
