George, I had my teacher voice on!! Hormones to..[baaa] I had had a bad day…..

    Here goes.

There are 3 saints and three sinners and they need to get to the other side of the river. BUT, you can’t leave a saint with a sinner because they will hex the saint to death and the saint would then go to hell. (Get the point?[blush2])Oh, but you can have a saint and a sinner in the boat at the same time….does that make sense????…[evil5]

How do they all get safely across when you can only hold 2 ppl in a boat at a time. Or was that 3 people???[withstupid]

Just realised, you can have one saint one sinner but not two sinners to one saint!! Tha’s where I’ve stuffed up!!! NOw have a go… Oh yeah it is only 2 in the boat. If memory serves me right, it should be able to be done in 11 moves.

    Verry verry clever Lizzie.

The solution is so clear now, yet it baffled so many of us.

    new riddle

3 men go into a car yard to buy a car. There is one for $30 so they pay the salesman $10 each. The saleman goes and tells the boss, he tells the salesman to give them $5 back. Because he can’t split $5 evenly be puts $2 in his pocket and gives them $1 each back.

Therefore they have paid $9 each for the car. Three x $9 = $27 plus the $2 in the salesman’s pocket = $29. Where’s the other dollar gone ????

Isn’t this one of those mathematical puzzles that can’t be solved – or is it just too hard for me?

    Car cost before mistake was found = $10 * 3 = $30
    Car cost after mistake was found = $30 – $5 = $25
    Car cost + Salesman = $25 + $2 = $27
    Refund to each person = $3 / 3 = $1
    Each person’s share of car cost and salesman = $27 / 3 = $9
    The correct calculation should be:
    ($9 + $1) * 3 = $27 + $3 = $30
The one dollar was never there. The calculation in the question is incorrect due to the fact that the salesman was counted twice. The correct calculation should be $27 + $3 = $30 since the salesman money is included in $27.

Very good Chan, but you’d be amazed at the number of people who try to work it out.
