If you have been struck by bad luck and misfortune then I sympathise and I am sorry. I do however think it is selfish of people to have children if they cannot afford to look after them. Does anyone disagree?

we had our children pry-er to my injury …and no we didn't get any hand outs nor did we expect any …i was a hard worker and wish i still could be  …also we are trying to get of the system that is why we are trying to buy the property ..i have been studying and am intending to work once we get to wa ..have a couple of work prospects ,,,very hard to get work when you have injuries no mater wot the injury ..with so many compo clams …i for one believe people should where possible take responsibility for there actions  and not blame ore try to blame anyone else ,,i stuffed up and because i stuffed up i hurt myself ..no ones fault but my own..so why should i have gone an compo …yes i could of …but i have morals ..and i blame myself ….or should i say my stupidity ..i am grateful i have a supportive family ..

when I saw the title of this thread I thought:

" oh wow, here's another family caught in the mortgage belt struggling. The poor buggers have probably already sold off everything they own to keep up with the mortgage, but hey, at least they are not too proud to say they need help"

Instead, I find someone who isnt struggling at all, a family with 3 vehicles, 2 of them nice 4wd's, a pile of cash and they are not working at all.

They clearly dont NEED help, they just WANT it……..which I find offensive, considering how many families out there are losing their homes to the banks. They are the ones who NEED help…….not posers like this guy.

he wants a leg up. Lets help those who are slipping first huh?

WHY DO YOU HAVE FIVE KIDS?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Rhys

Are you implying that anyone on a pension shoudn't have kids?

I must admit – I had the same thought as Rhys.

They can have kids – but 5??

Come on now; common-sense has to (but hasn't) prevail.

Kids are a very expensive past time – even if you are trying not to spend money on them.

Bottom line; if you can't afford them – don't have them.

yeah, yeah – "it's my right to have them" and all that – doesn't mean you should have that many. Maybe one or two with your situation. Anyway, you've made the choice and now you are here.

Spud, I would be looking to a solicitor loan, or one of those types of set-ups.

Much higher interest of course, but if its only $10k, then the extra cost won't be overly high.

You are assuming Spud had kids while on the pension.

What should he do if he kids came first and the pension second? Adopt a few kids out ???

And what is a solicitor loan? They don't exist!

That's strange, I was under the impression they were there to give loans to people in your situation. They need more people in the area you want to move so the fact that you  have more then 3 kids should work in your favor not against it.  Why not give Brandon Grylls office a call and see if they can point you out in the right direction,  I think he'd be your rep if you moved there anyway and could find out why did Keystart knocked you back.

True;  I did assume he had kids while being able-bodied and working.

I still think having 5 kids in this day and age is impractical unless you are earning about $1 mill per year – that's if you want to have a decent lifestyle as well.

Most people I've seen with this many kids struggle their whole lives. Maybe they are totally happy?

I'd rather put a lot more quality time and quality life into 2 kids; take them on nice holidays, buy them decent things, put them in good schools.

Our family doctor has 5 kids, but he has a practice, and his wife is a nurse who does agency work and earns a nice income without having to sacrifice too much time away from the kids. Their lifestyle is very nice.

For the average earning Father, with a Wife who stays at home with the 5 kids……a life of less is guaranteed – unless there are generous Gubmint handouts.

    No thanks.

It's a conscious decision. Some may say it is mercenary. I say it is about having the best life you can, and have kids in it.

The tricky part is balancing the number of kids with the income.

Most people don't think about this in my experience; they just plow ahead and pump 'em out. That's fine; but they invariably end up in the same boat as our mate Spud for one reason or another – they lose their job, or their health, or both etc.

As for the "Solicitor Loans" these are like a second mortgage loan they provide from trust accounts. They do exist – not all solicitors do them, and they are higher interest rate. They are usually short -term. We have done two of them over the years. Work well for a short-term solution.

    spudway,

firstly, at no time did I ever comment on the number of kids you have. You have me confused with someone else. While I agree with Marc, my objections to this thread are as follows:

    1. the "family needs help" title.

    2. someone firing insults at me non stop because I raise questions

    3. someone with appalling spelling & grammar referring to me as "stupid" and dyslexic.

    4. someone being paid nearly $1k a week by the government. That person freely admits that not only can they survive on this amount, they are able to save money AND live the same lifestyle they always have.

    5. someone claiming a benefit for an "injury" shortly after their business fails.

    6. someone asking for help to buy a property while claiming this will lead to them getting off welfare. How is that plausible?

    7. someone claiming that I called & abused his wife, when I'm not even in the country.

    8. someone attempting to intimidate & discredit me publicly, publishing personal details & making baseless claims. You are now guilty of defamation, and thanks to you admitting you have $50k cash, my lawyer may decide to take you to the cleaners……assuming you fail to apologise.

    9. someone asking for help while refusing to help himself.

    10. someone claiming they don't want a handout while continuing to take a massive one. They have a pile of cash and assets they refuse to sell.

I could go on but really…….who cares?

THESE ARE THE FACTS OF THE CASE AND THEY ARE UNDISPUTED

no doubt you will respond in the only language you understand: juvenile hostility

    Hi, Spudway

Have you considered a Lease-Option? You get the vendor to lend you the remaining $60K as a loan, and you pay the Vendor at an agreed interest rate. This website explains how that could work.

    Hi, Marc

My best friend in Singapore is going down that path of pumping them kids out. I asked him just how large a family he wants, and he told me that ideally, he wants 2 daughters, 4 sons and 2 dogs. He and wife already have 2 dogs and 1 daughter who is only 2 months old. They are already starting on their 2nd kid.

I asked him about spacing out the years between the children, and he responded by saying that since it took them one year of trying to have their first child, it should take the same amount of time to get their 2nd one.  Instead of spreading out and having to deal with a crying newborn every 2-3 yrs, he said it is better to deal with all the child bearing and diaper changing in as short a time as possible! At the minimal, he and wife wants 4 kids and they are going to squeeze them all into their 3 BR apt home.

For those who do not know the housing situation in Singapore, 90% of the population live in public housing apts, the equivalent standard is similar to the median private Apartment in any major capital city in Australia. The private market is very expensive, and usually start from S$700K onwards for a decent 3 BR apt in the outer suburbs, about 15-20 kms from the CBD.

I agree with you, Marc, in that if someone want to have lots of kids, then they got to be in a position to be able to provide the best options available. So, your family doctor is in such a position.

I recalled reading Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad, and RK once wrote in that book that his Rich Dad had to be rich because he chose to start a family.

Told the Wifey when we got married that I would like to have 3 children, so we better work smarter on our IPs.

Spudway: This is not intented at you in anyway. I am simply carrying on the discussion since Marc brought up a point that prompted me to chip in another point.

Leave the kids out of it people.. it is far more selfish to not have children then expect other peoples kids to care for you when your old. 5 children is not alot and they are already here. The guy was simply putting up a proposal as a way to get into the housing market. This is an investment forum and people are supposed to learn things and get helpful advise from experts in here, instead we have CRASHY giving out crap.

Good luck spudway with getting what you need and hats off to you for asking and putting a proposal up there. If there is anyone in this forum that knows possible lenders that could help.. pass them on.

5 kids is perfectly fine – one of my best mates who is the same age as me (27) is just about to pop out baby #5.  they have an average wage of $90k a year.  they dont struggle.  its all about making wise money decisions.  besides … this is a property investment forum, not a parenting forum.  so how about yas cut him some slack when it comes to kids.

I'm sorry Sienna but I take offence at your comment that your selfish if you don't have kids to take care of you when your old!
I agree the subject of children is off topic. But your comments are very inappropriate.
It is not a given that children are going to care for their elderly parents for a start.
I pay my taxes through hard work, contribute to my super and am trying hard to buy property, served my country in the military – I'm certainly not expecting the government to be fully responsible for me when I am grey.

Maree well done on your future plans on looking after yourself and my comments were there to put a stop to the criticism of spudway choosing to have more than 2.1 children and get ahead.

You can take offense if you like, its Australia,  but its funny you can read this whole topic and then find my comments out of everything that has been said ….innapropriate. A bit rich.
