im in the process of purchasing a house and am unsure what to do with the front sunroom. the whole house is polished floorboards except for lino in the kitchen and front sunroom. the kitchen lino is fine but the sunroom is damaged.
im guestimating the room size here, but does anyone know around about how much it would cost to get the lino removed and the floorboards polished (assuming they are in good enough condition) for a room 5 meters wide by 9 meters long? even a rough estimate would be helpful, we are doing a rough budget up for the renos.
my husband works fulltime and we want the job done ASAP after settlement so it can go on the rental market – so wont have the time to do it ourselves.
I think about $25psqm should do it. But just call a local floor polisher and ask them their square metre costs.

Be aware that really old lino can contain asbestos.
its not poison gas but it does need to be removed with care attention and the correct procedure
google it for the laws in your area
professional floor sanders are a really good deal
done a couple my self and have never come close to the results they getcheers !

Suavemechanic is right but its not the real old stuff you have to worry about its the late sixties & nineteen seventies stuff you need to worry about. You need what is now called an "A" Class or friable asbestos removal licence to remove it. Check with the authorities in your state. If you rip it up and sand you'll spread the contamination through the house.
If the backing to the lino is black then its really old and not likely to contain asbestos if its grey/brown get it tested as it could be asbestos or glass/synthetic fibre. Cost for size you describe of a qualified asbestos removalist would be up to $3000Brian Sketcher

eepers – would it be a better idea to then just covering the lino with new lino, instead of polishing it? is that do-able? its not black underneith – its greyish. cos there is a tear in it and i could see the colour.

Spoke to local floor installers/polishers.
If they pull up carpet (don't know about other surfaces) $8 per sqm
Timber prep and polishing $30 to $36 + GST per sqm depending on quality of polish.Best of luck with the renos
i had my floors done recently it cost $17 p m2 using 2pak enamel( this is harder wearing ) (its a fantastic job) also the top coat sould be semi gloss not full gloss, full gloss looks nice but tenants will inevitably scratch and wear the surface causing the sheen to be lost giving you a dull look.
it will depend where you are..but my quotes were between (17-24)/m2

Janesorry jane im in wollongong NSW, agreed recomendations are grest, but i didnt relly go from recomendations i called all the tradies, spoke to them asked quote per metere, i ended up with 4 on the job quotes, spoke to them and essentially analysed them to see how true to there word they were or whether they were shonky guys looking for a quick easy buck…it took 2 days
day 1-sand, nail old nails down, and putty, then a sealer coat is applyed
day 2-2pkcoat or polyurethane(i recomend 2 pak)coat is applied, then final finish coat 1-2hrs after, which is essentially what finish you require(matt, satin, hi-gloss, semi-gloss….also they can apply stain to change the colour iv herd that can change the image dramaticlly…)
btw, 8hrs after final coat is applied you can walk and move furniture back in….i was suprised tooo
i used "get-a-gleem" they are a francise i believe so they could have similar products….best of luck
