On another note, I understand that many folks working in the mines would like to invest in property but can't always find good property in other parts of the country.

Does anyone know of which newspapers or other publications that folks in those mining areas read?

    Kind regards,

    Ken

In the NW of WA Newman, Port Heldand and Karratha they get the North West Telegraph newspaper.

im off for my medical tomorrow !
the work i can do  isnt advertised ….
so i have been asking every one i meet " do you know any one who works in mining ?  "
most people are surprisingly helpfull ,took a few months but
a mate rang  with a phone no i sent a cv ,then flew up at my expense for an interview and did a days trial which i loved….
    result !
warning tho i was making more money than my dad as a 22 year old working in the wa desert, and had a bunch of gold shares, several motorcycles etc
on my week off i saw  the black tuesday crash on tv and laughed at the silly unfit stock brokers all winging and crying

a few days later i realised i was directly affected  !
six months later i was able to find my next job digging holes for the swimming pool co (for $250 a week ! )
its a boom and like the tech stock bubble it will stop
    be  ready

good luck have fun and be safe !

    Hi everybody,
My hubby has been working in the NSW mines for a couple of years as an underground fitter and loving it. He works a 3 twelve hour shifts of a weekend, and sometimes overtime during the week. Last financial year he made around $180k. I would say to those who are considering working in a mine go for it, but it isn't for everybody. It has given us alot of opportunitys and we are now thinking about buying an investment property. There are alot of risks involved in mining but in saying that you take chances everyday in driving a car or even just crossing the road.
It seems as though its quite hard for some to get into mines without experience, although my partner tells me all the time of new people coming without the slightest clue. My advice for those who are not experienced(clean skin) maybe try and get a job with a contractor first and work your way up from there. Also I've noticed alot of traineeships for truck drivers and machinery operating. One of my female friends scored a job as a trainee truck driver, she also loves it to and wouldn't go back. Im not a 100% sure on this but i dont think you even need a previous truck license to drive in the mines as they accredit you on site.
    Good luck guys!!!
P.S If anyone would like to know of some contractors around here please let me know.

    Hi All,

My husband has been looking for employment in the mines for a while but no luck yet. He is a qualified Welder with years of experience.

We are based on the East Coast (Brisbane) but he is willing to travel anywhere in Oz or even overseas.

Can anyone give me some contact details agencies/contractors that may be able to help find him some work?

    Regards,

    hi all,,

from my experience the mining game is a lot of luck and timing!! i was fortunate enough to basically been offered a job on the recomendation of a friend which just proves the saying its not what you know but who. sometimes the lure of big coin over west can grab people but i have settled for an above average wage and excellent lifestyle in the newcastle coalfields with my family and friends just minutes away. having said that i dont want to be busting my guts my whole life hence why i'm on here..lol.
FIFO is great for a single person but can put some undue stress on a relationship.
my advice would be to find out all the mobs in the game and face to face it. a lot of mobs are getting quite corporate but are still mostly run by miners and can appreciate a straight up approach.

    cheers
