    Hey all,

    Well, I’ll soon (3 months or so) be renting out my Inner City apartment here in Brisbane. I’ve got the following:

    * 2 bed
    * 2 bath
    * 85sqm unit (including a 13sqm balcony)
    * 1 carpark
    * Lock up Storage

    However, I’m trying to be creative on increasing the rent. The apartment is relatively new, so there’s not much I can do in the way of improving the structure!

    So I’m thinking of including Wireless Internet with the rent. A wireless router sits under a chair at the moment connecting via ADSL, and I’m paying $50/month for about 20 gigabytes of download. I reckon a $15/week increase in rent would offset the need to sign up for Internet access for the tenant plus they get wireless connectivity.

    Has anyone else done this? Should I also put in a clause in the tenancy agreement that states that I’m not liable for anything that the person downloads? Any other legal ramifications.

    what happens when they download over 20 gig of movies or music or tv shows in month, do they get shaped or are there extra charges?

    What happens if there is a problem with their connection, if they call the ISP’s helpdesk they wont have all the account details I think.

    Hi mja,

    Some ppl (myself included) would prefer to have choice over there speeds, download limits and shaping. This being said, it would be great to move into a place and have some decent internet access while I was organising my own adsl instead of having to use 56k [glum2].

    But when it comes to the general population I am sure that most would find the wireless adsl plan perfect [biggrin], but voigtstr’s comments are valid points to concider as well.

    Shaped to 28.8k, or thereabouts.

    Now that raises a good point, unless I provide them with all the account details, which they can use to contact the ISP…

    Now that raises a good point, unless I provide them with all the account details, which they can use to contact the ISP…

    Unless you become their helpdesk :)

    Hi all

    Don’t want to rain on the idea it is a creative one. I am concerned though what happens if the system falls over or is hacked into. Wireless whilst very useful ( I have it on my laptop) can be a hazard to the ill-informed. Not sure how much you know about it.
    I would also wonder what would happen if the tenant lost data etc due to a hacker. Would they be coming back to you as the suppplier for retribution?

    Currently ISP’s don’t take responsibility for hacks or hack attempts on there subscribers. Therefore I would think that the user couldn’t cause trouble if they are hacked and want to sue or seek compo.

    There has been a push recently to place more responsibility on the ISP’s for the protection of their end users. If this does happen then the responsibility would be on the ISP and not the landlord I would think. This should be a long way off as it is going to be extremely expensive for ISP’s and it has to go through the politicians first [biggrin]

    I have lots of problems with my wireless connections. If you offer it and your tenants have problems, they may be more trouble than it is worth.

    hi mja

    give them cable broadband access only

    and a big big Plasma TV….
    that will justify the added rent charge
