    Hi
Haven’t been to NZ either but I’ve done lots of backpacking in my time. I think anything that cracks people up. A name that becomes the buzz around NZ & OS because of the name, the character of the place, the owner & of course the impeccable service….Believe me word spreads fast amongst backpackers with this kind of formula

Doesn’t Rotarowa smell like rotten eggs, maybe you could find the mauri word for sweet smelling & plant lavender or jasmin or nice smelling roses down the entrance path as people arrive & have insense or oil burners burning inside or the smell of cooking bread, cakes &/or coffee which you would sell…when I backpacked I loved home cooked stuff at hostels instead of all the packet stuff you eat…(just a crazy idea)

I just had another idea, when I was in Peru in ’99 went to Machu Pucchu (like every tourist) but also stayed in little town at mountain base called aqua callientus (meaning hot water) You could use that or the Mauri version or Mauri for hot mud or something…hope this helps
PS sorry about any wrong spelling – it’s late & my brain has gone to slush after full day of Msteclass today, which was excellent BTW if you’re interested in going
    bye for now positivewiz

    Hi all,

Just a quick update on the project. We are still going through the regulatory process before any works can actually start.

In NZ there is this undesirable piece of legislation called the Resource Management Act (RMA) which has to be satisfied, together with building compliance, fire, health and disability requirements. Our designer is working on the most feasible plan without opening a can of worms.

We will begin gutting some of the rooms in one wing this week and then paint, carpet, bathroom fittings and furtniture will go in. We have to provide facilities and wheel chair access for the disabled and will have to remove part of the building to construct an enclosed stair well and reception area.

A new hot water system is required, smoke detectors and possibly an upgrade of the sprinkler system.

Providing this meets with Council approval we will then have to put in self catering kitchen facilities, internet kiosk, communal entertainment area, maybe even a swimming pool. The list goes on.

Once our plans are approved we should get completed quite quickly. We hope to be at least operational by the end of May for the Lions Rugby Tour

BTW we haven’t chosen a name yet. I’m gathering a list of possibilities so we can fit it to our overall marketing plan – every suggestion helps.

    Cheers
    Jeff

    ” COUNT SHEEP “

    ” FLOCK INN “

    ” Z BEDS “

http://WWW.ZZZ ” easy to find on the net

Do you have any breakdown of the type of tourists and backpackers who are staying in the area ?
What is the main country of origin ? Age brackets ? etc. If for instance, the main group are British, which it seems they are in regional NSW at the moment, then perhaps it might help to name and aim for that market initially. Later, once the business is established and well known, it won’t matter what you called it when you opened.

    Good luck.
    cheers

For the name – I would keep it basic and easy to find- Rotorua Backpackers. As for marketing the property – find out how backpackers make their decisions by asking them directly. Stand around other accompdation spots or tourist hangouts and ask backpackers directly how they decided to stay at this location – who did they ask? where did they find the name/phone of this accomodation? etc. Don’t feel comfortable doing this? Get a friend to do it for you. This excercise also gives you the opportunity to test a few names and see what might work best. Just make sure you ask your market directly. Good luck

Big sign out the front with a nervous sheep and a farmer in gumboots with a glint in his eye sneaking up behind the poor animal .

    Cashflow,

Following on with the nervous sheep angle, how about:

    Fukafurryfella backpackers. [biggrin]

Aren’t the mud baths in Rotorua called Wuckawurrawurra (and pronounced fuka-furra-furra in Maori)…

For marketing, I’m picturing a cartoon picture of a farmer in gumboots smoking a cigar leaning on the fence of a sheep pen with a lot of nervous or meek looking sheep.

    Cheers,
    Michael.
