I would only use a licenced roofer / plumber to do my roof. If he gets it wrong the risk is disproportionate to the savings.
Also ask does he mind if you contact his insurance company to ensure he is suitably insured to preform the works required.
Will more than likely change his mind when he knows he has to insure the work and give you a copy of his insurance policy.
