Does anyone know what the current status is wrt personal info given by RP Data?  I know that RP Data used to give names and contact details of property owners but just lost a case in the Federal Court against a Government department that won't give RP Data that info any more. RP Data says in a press release that they hope that the Department will continue providing personal information until an appeal is heard.  Does anyone know if RP Data are still providing personal information and, if so, to who? Is it just RE Agents and Valuers or is it to anyone who is willing to pay for the info?

The reason I ask is that a friend has just done a property course where they will be given 3 months' access to all personal information through RP Data.  My understanding was that investors/developers like me could not access that information.

    Any comments would be welcomed.

    Cheers

There are legitimite reasons for the information to be provided (to valuers & real estate agents) beyond that there can be little reason (possibly developers) to access such information. I had not heard of such a restriction but will follow up closely with the valuers that I am dealing with on a number of sites.

Vals generally donot provide the full details of the transaction to their clients only the date and relevant particulars of the sale – owners do not need more than that and privacy restrictions as they are restrict the distribution of this information.

    Hi Linar.

I have been in contact with RP Data, because i was receiving telemarketing calls from finance companies recently. I was told that they got my information from RP DATA. Unfortunately it is true. RP DATA gives information to anyone who pays for a subscription. They give names phone numbers and addresses as well as alot of other information and they have no restriction on who can have a membership, not even for telemarketing companies who are clearly targeting home owners.

    Cheers,
    Don.

RPData and PDSLive both will be losing the bulk of owners contact details around mid June this year thanks to a cash grab by state government – they're going to provide that information on a cost basis of about $3-5 per enquiry, regardless of if you have a subscription to either of these services or not. State Govt say its to stop 'some real estate' agents from abusing the database, but in reality all they're doing is grabbing cash becaue the information will still be available. The databases will still hold address and name, just no phone number as far as I know.
Be aware that as the database stands at present only somne entries have phone numbers and they're usually provided by the vendor/owners when the property settles as a choice they make at that time. To have RP Data membership you 'must' be a real estate agent or similar type of agency. Telemarketers cannot get subscriptions to it as far as I know, unless they're piggy backing off another person/company. Telemarketers buy large databases of numbers from other marketing companies that specialise in gathering that information. Just be aware that every survey you fill out, every foundation ticket you buy for that big house you want to win, every petition you sign, that data is more often than not collected and used.

RP data and PDS are appealing the courts decision. They argue that the ability to view personal details is the only way to guage whether a transaction is legitimate. The transparency of ownership details prevents companies , or individuals from wrongly influencing sales data to portray inaccurate sales figures. Every user who subscribes to these databases agrees to the terms and conditions of use. Not adhering to privacy laws results in being disqualified from further use.

RP Data is still providing this info as it is a legitimate business and not a telemarketing company. The government has given RP Data the right to keep this information free and available untill the appeal is heard and the likelyhood is that RP Data will continue to provide the same high level of information it has in the past
