Renovation Workshops

Hi all,
I want to start on the road of property renovation to one day replace my current full time job income.

I want to learn as much as possible, have bought books on the subject but learning from theory is difficult.

I came across some info on seminar given by Stephen Tolle and Cherie Barber (renovation for profit) through a free information session, seems a bit expensive but given by two of the most successful renovators in the business.

Has anyone done these workshops & what do you think?

Thanks in advance.

I have done this workshop and found it to be very informative, particularily with regard to purchasing materials at trade price. I have used some of their advice since the seminar and saved more than the cost of the seminar on timber and tiles that I bought for a renovation I recently completed.

I have also found Property Women and Reno Kings also run workshops - depending on your location.

These workshops are very informative and helpful indeed. I did one sometime ago and got to know a lot of new techniques from there.

I have heard that Cherie and Stephens' course is great, although I haven't done it myself. Sometimes you've got to invest good money into a good education. Like Jason suggested, he saved the cost of the course just on one project alone. Worth considering I think.

You may also be interested in some e-Books I have written for renovators of investment properties (Cherie Barber has actually purchased all of them!!!).

These are based on my 17 years of experience as a designer and working in the renovation/construction industry.

Hi,
I am just new at all of this and haven't even bought a property yet.  However, I believe that you can claim the cost of the seminar on your tax.
Just my 2 cents worth,

Make sure you have a passion for this. Renovating is not easy.

Seminars and learning are good, but it is still a good idea to start slow. Buying a $1 million fix up job is risky for your first time around. Start small and build your way up. That is exactly what I am doing

Also...sorry I forgot to add this in.

Sarah Beanie from the show Property Ladder has a bunch of books out on property development and renovation. She is a genius.

The books are for the UK but they have loads of nuggets of gold in them.

would you be interested in an exchange of courses? am interested in the reno course and am offering to trade for any one of the others that I have done, pick and choose what would interest you. Property options by Ric Otton, Trusts, Property accounting and taxation by chan and naylor, everything on property investing by Dymphna and Chris Gray, developments by Carly, We have spent a totsl of Aud 16000 on all these courses. It was money well spent based on the knowledge we now have and continue to have..

As i have said earlier in this topic, Steve and Cheries course is fantastic. I am just about to start a renovation on a block of units I have purchased. I would not have been able to undertake this project without the contacts that I made at the course. I have obtained finance through a broker that spoke at the course (I tried to obtain finance myslef through two other brokers who were not able to hlep me). I have set up a trust and company to protect my personal assets and engaged an accountant to manage my tax requirements again they spoke at the course.

I feel that as a result of this course I have been able to take action and am well on the way to a new career in property development! This is project number two since the course in August last year!

I should also mention that I call Cherie whenever I have a question about something I am not sure of and they have a timely answer fro me.

I believe you are right - but only if you have an income relating to the expense your claiming. In other words if you do a property reno course you can only claim it if you have an income coming from something relating to property. So if you bought a digital camera, you can't claim it unless you have an income coming from photography.
